NEW DELHI: A viral WhatsApp message suggesting changes in the itinerary and rules of the Indian Railways from July 1 was found to be fake.
The message, which is being widely circulated on social media and WhatsApp, claimed that Indian Railways is going to introduce changes to ten of its rules, including the elimination of waiting list and a refund of 50 per cent of the fare on cancellation of a 'Tatkal' ticket.
The fake message also claimed that bookings for AC category will take place from 10 AM to 11 AM, while the booking for sleeper coaches will be allowed from 11 AM to 12 PM.
For Rajdhani and Shatabdi trains, provisions for paperless booking have been made and the number of coaches in these train is all set to increase, are some of the claims of this message, which has created a lot of confusion among the passengers.
Railway authorities have dismissed the information in this message to be completely fake and baseless. On investigation, it was found that similar messages were circulated in 2016 as well.
“This is not the first time such messages have come to light. In the past, a similar message was shared widely during the festival season and at the time of the announcement of the budget. The Railways has not issued any such notification. The new timetable will be issued from August 15," said Shankar Lal Meena, station master Gurgaon.
Railways officials have refuted all the information in the message. There is no change in the rule governing the cancellation of 'Tatkal' tickets. Even the information about paperless ticketing in Rajdhani and Shatabdi is incorrect, an official said.
